The Age of the Unthinkable

Description The stringent lending practices of the banks are exacerbating the recession as evidenced by the precipitous decline in BPP and the consequent decline in BC. A consensus industry view is that conditions in the industry will only improve once the Banks demonstrated confidence in property as a preferred investment and relaxed their stringent lending criteria .

Our Stakeholder Analysis reveals that the Banks exert an INORDINATE amount of Power and Influence on the Building and Property markets - and by implication the Economy generally. They play in all the quadrants of the Stakeholder Matrix and are SIMULTANEOUSLY PLAYERS, RESERVES, REFEREES AND CROWD. They make the rules of the game and influence it. As stated recently by Jeff Osborne, CEO of the 7250 member Retail Motor Industry (RMI): “. . . They (the Banks) do hold the key to economic recovery and to the survival of small businesses. Although we are seeing the return of some stability in the market, there will be no real recovery until stable consumers can access credit.” (Bus. Report, 26 November 2009).

The question is: How can we create an environment that gives us the leverage to influence the Banks? The Building and Property Industry needs a Grand Strategy to take a hand in shaping its own future.

We have studied the best selling book of Joshua Cooper Ramo (The Age of the Unthinkable: 2009) and have applied the revolutionary concepts to our analysis of the current crisis faced by the building industry. It is thought provoking and may even be controversial. But it contains an important message that must be told.

We presented our findings to the last Strategic Forum Meeting of 2009. It was well received and we were requested by the Forum to spread the message much wider than only our Subscribers. Consequently we have posted the presentation: Making Sense of the Building Industry in the Age of the Unthinkable, on our website www.strategicforum.co.za (for Subscribers only); but also on our free subscription website for wider dissemination www.bmiknowledgecafe.co.za

Reading through this presentation of Dr lewis what greed can do, it actually takes over your senses and reason and your whole thinking become one mayor blind spot,Dr Hertzog once said, real courage is to stand up against the mass manipulised thinking and than the internal strength of your believe to keep on propagating what is right,I believe there lots of economists that has seen it but had not the courage to stand up against the manipulised mass by greed.
