Corobrik scores big for World Cup

Durban’s revered Moses Mabhida Stadium is all set for the soccer world cup and Corobrik - South Africa’s leaders in clay pavers and bricks are proud that their products were chosen for construction of this historic venue.

“Corobrik products have been at the forefront of all the upgrade and beautification projects in Durban’s preparation for 2010. The pathways around Moses Mabhida Stadium alone saw almost 15 000 square meters of Burgundy 50mm pavers laid.  We are pleased that our products were chosen over all others for such a momentous project in the history of our city. This reiterates that Corobrik is at the top of their game when it comes to bricks and pavers,” says Mike Ingram, Director of Sales at Corobrik.

According to Ingram, over 100 000  square meters of Durban’s beachfront promenade was paved using Corobrik’s Burgundy 50mm and 60mm Clay Pavers, Grey Corocobble and a combination of charcoal and apricot colored Coroplaza.  He maintains that these pavers will enhance the appearance of the approximate 7km beachfront promenade.

“Corobrik’s hard burnt clay pavers used for the beachfront promenade offer the best of both worlds. A rich combination of earthy shades are achieved as a result of the intense firing cycles used in the production process and they were matched to create the attractive, “wave” pattern designed by the architects. The salt and high humidity level which is prevalent in the vicinity of the beachfront area was of little concern to us as our clay pavers offer an excellent resistance to staining and corrosion, both acidic and alkaline alike.  In fact, Corobrik clay pavers were used when the beachfront was revamped in 1988/89 and have performed as expected in this very harsh environment,” says Ingram.

Michael Tod of Michael Tod Architects, who worked with the city’s Strategic Projects Unit to design and coordinate the paving around Moses Mabhida Stadium, says that the decision to use Corobrik was taken for two main reasons.

“There was a significant presence of Corobrik clay pavers within the existing Promenade and these had a proven track record of reliability and durability within this harsh environment. The second important aspect was that we wanted to limit the use of different materials. Since we had to incorporate the existing central beachfront into the design philosophy, it made sense to utilize the same pavers.  This, along with the introduction of a polished concrete band every 50m, we were able to unify the old with the new,” he says.

Ingram concludes, “Corobrik’s products are reputed for their durability and aesthetic appeal. Being involved in this historic project which highlights our city’s reputation to the world is yet another reason to celebrate the magnitude of our brand.”
