Corobrik paves the way

The site formally known as ‘Pan Africa’ housing a bus depot of historical value only a few years ago is today home to the iconic Pan Africa Shopping Centre. A 16 000m2 shoppers paradise in the heart of Alexandra, built with Corobrik’s pavers and bricks.

“We are delighted that our pavers and bricks were selected for this integral development which is part of the Presidential Alexandra Renewal Project, aimed at improving living conditions in rural areas. While all projects are significant, this shopping complex will encourage further growth and development in the community. It is also the first fully integrated shopping mall and taxi facility to be constructed in the country, creating job opportunities and local economic growth.” says Allin Dangers, Corobrik Director of Sales – Inland.

Dangers says that Corobrik supplied over 150 000 Country Classic Travertine FBS bricks, 73 500, 60mm Champagne and 181 000, 60mm Burgundy Pavers. All products were locally manufactured and delivered as construction progressed.

“The 60mm hard wearing, robust pavers were opted for since both pedestrian and light vehicular traffic was anticipated for the outer areas of the complex. The lighter coloured Champagne Pavers were used to create a border while the Burgundy Pavers were laid in the main walk- and roadways.”

Bertie Meyburgh representing GAPP Architects in association with SAOTA and PADC (The Pan Africa Development Company) said that the selection of product was imperative for the overall appeal of the shopping complex.

“The durable face brick adds a contemporary, urban feel. Equally significant is the fact that Corobrik’s face bricks are maintenance free and this was a welcomed benefit since it eliminates the carbon debt associated with a lifetime of maintenance,” says Meyburgh.

According to Meyburgh, for a commercial building such as the Pan Africa, sustainability was a huge criterion which, with Corobrik products, was easily attainable.

“The bricks are manufactured from the ground and do not release volatile organic compounds which is harmful to the environment, it’s a certainty that using Corobrik means being environmentally responsible,” says Meyburgh.

“The overall finish of the centre was commended by President Jacob Zuma when he officially opened the Pan Africa in June last year,” concluded Dangers.   “To be involved in a project such as Pan Africa, where even the President of South Africa has acknowledged the aesthetic appeal of our products is an achievement.”
