Energy Efficiency Guidelines

With rising energy costs for both electricity and fuels, and given that in the brick sector energy can account for between 40% and 60% of production costs, energy efficiency represents a significant opportunity for cost reduction. These guidelines for the South African Clay Brick sector cover energy efficiency benchmarking, best practice, energy management systems as well as accessing funding for the implementation of energy efficiency projects.

As many brick manufacturers know, thermal energy accounts for more than 80% of energy use.

A thermal model has been developed to help brick companies better understand where the heat energy is flowing in their drier and kiln installations, with the aim of identifying these losses and possible best practices to mitigate those losses.

 

This guide has been developed to assist brick companies understand which financial mechanisms are applicable to them and the project that they are trying to implement. Helps technology suppliers better understand how they can serve their clients in helping them overcome these financial barriers.

These guidelines have been developed by the Energy Efficient Clay Brick (EECB) Project. The project, implemented by Swisscontact in close partnership with the Clay Brick Association of Southern Africa (CBA) and funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) aims to ensure environmental sustainability by seeking economic solutions to increased energy efficiency and lower greenhouse gas emissions in the South African clay brick sector.
